# Assess Your Leadership Skills with the Leadership Practices Inventory

Research is very clear- for people to perform at higher levels, they need to have both ambitious goals and effective feedback. Effective feedback is absolutely essential.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership approaches leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors.

## The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®

LPI was created by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner in the early 1980s and first identified in their internationally best-selling book, *The Leadership Challenge.* After conducting hundreds of interviews, reviewing thousands of case studies, and analyzing more than two million survey questionnaires to understand those times when leaders performed at their personal best, there emerged five practices common to making extraordinary things happen.

Leadership development is ultimately about change, changing the way we interact with other people in order to lead them more effectively. We have found that through formal schooling and company-provided education, business people have had a lot of exposure to management practices and actions. However, they re not as familiar with the specific and most important behaviors that define leaders.

## Why the Leadership Practices Inventory is Beneficial

The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their leadership skills. Here are just a few of the benefits:

- The LPI helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses as a leader. This information can be used to create a development plan that targets areas for improvement.
- By retaking the LPI over time, you can measure your progress and see how your leadership skills have improved.
- The LPI includes feedback from others, so you can get a more accurate picture of how you are perceived as a leader.
- The LPI is based on research and input from successful leaders. By using the LPI, you can learn from the best and apply their practices to your own leadership style.

It informs all of the activities in both programs, because they are all focused on the individual leader and what she or he can do to improve. These programs are not about organizations; they are about leaders and their relationships with others.

There are six disciplines that inform the architecture of these programs. Regardless of content, learning activity, or setting, here are a few other important principles that help to shape the program’s design: 

- Leadership is everyone’s business.
- Leadership is a relationship.
- The best leaders are the best learners.
- It takes practice—*deliberate practice*—to become a better leader.
- Leadership is an aspiration and a choice.
- Leaders make a difference.
