OwnUp!® Accountability Labs · The practice of clarity for learning and improving

Accountability that survives a busy shift — not just a training day.

Accountability Labs are an on-site, applied learning series for leaders, managers, and individual contributors. Three short labs turn OwnUp!® accountability principles and Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) into habits your people practice on real issues, in the meetings they already have — not in a classroom bubble.

Why one-time trainings don’t change what people actually do

Organizations in complex, high-stakes environments don't miss results because people forget who owns what by when. They miss results because, under pressure, people act on what they actually believe matters most, on what they sense leaders want, and on the relationship patterns they've learned to survive in — especially where power and expertise are uneven.

The pattern

Authority without candor

Technical leaders and subject-matter experts often carry strong authority, high standards, and a command-and-control stance. The people closest to the work see risk and drift early — but may still hesitate to speak up. A generic 'be more accountable' message doesn't touch that dynamic.

The fix

Practice, not a poster

Accountability Labs integrate OwnUp!® practices alongside HOP principles and a 'workers are the solution, not the problem' mindset — while explicitly addressing value conflicts, relationship skills, and power dynamics. Labs are the psychologically safe space to build the psychological readiness to minimize the gap between work as expected and work as actually done.

What the Labs are built to do

Every lab is anchored in Mindset → Skill Set → Practice, with equal emphasis on business results, safety, relationships, and how power is exercised.

Reduce friction now

Practical tools that clarify expectations, decisions, and ownership — and surface the value conflicts and relationship gaps underneath the friction.

Build real skill

Targeted accountability skills that change how people think, decide, and talk under pressure — not just what they know.

Embed a cadence

Simple routines added to meetings and workflows you already run, so accountability becomes a visible, repeatable practice.

Create shared language

One vocabulary across every leadership tier for clarity, ownership, learning, and operational safety.

How it works

Three lab series, delivered on-site

Each Core Series — 3 × 2-hour labs, for supervisors, managers, department heads, and site leadership.

1

Mindset & Friction Reduction

  • Reset accountability as clarity + choice + ownership, not punishment.
  • Surface real value tensions (e.g., quality vs. schedule, "don't rock the boat" vs. raising issues).
  • Introduce simple Immediate Issue Triage and Clarifying Expectations tools.
  • Practice on real issues; embed one small clarity habit into an existing meeting.
2

Skill Set: Conversations, Decisions & Power at Speed

  • Strengthen skills for decision clarity and concise accountability conversations.
  • Introduce a Decision Clarity mini-tool and a light structure for tough performance conversations.
  • Explore how status, expertise, and control affect what people will say to their leaders.
  • Practice power-aware questions ("What are you seeing that I might be missing?") and decisions that name both business and safety imperatives.
3

Practice: Team-Level Accountability & Review Loops

  • Move from individual habits to team norms and agreements.
  • Use simple Team Agreements and review loops ("Did we do what we said? What got in the way — systems, skills, or choices?").
  • Practice introducing agreements in a relationship-first way ("How will you have my back in this process?").
  • Embed short accountability check-ins into existing team and ops meetings.
Optional adaptation

Built for high-consequence, tightly regulated operations

For sites where the cost of a missed issue is measured in safety, not just schedule — heavy manufacturing, energy, defense, and other regulated operating environments — we add a focused adaptation for technical leaders and engineers: Relationship First, Issue Second.

  • Pair uncompromising safety principles with relationship-first behaviors.
  • Explore how expertise and authority change what others will actually tell you.
  • Practice power-aware questioning and naming dual pressures (safety + schedule) without diluting safety.
  • Build responses to issues that increase — not decrease — the flow of honest information from the people closest to the work.

We scope this adaptation during the intake call once we understand your site and regulatory context.

Between labs: upgrade one rhythm you already have

Rather than adding new meetings, each lab asks leaders to upgrade one existing rhythm. Practice happens in the work, not in a classroom.

  • End key meetings by naming decisions, owners, dates — and the value tensions being managed.
  • Use an expectations checklist on one high-stakes delegation each week.
  • Add a 5-minute "Did we do what we said / what got in the way?" review to a current huddle.
  • Use Ask-for-Clarity questions before unclear or high-risk tasks.
  • Have one structured peer feedback conversation per cycle.
  • Use the issue-raising tool to bring forward one concern in the next month.
  • Identify where accountability is being weaponized or made use of for political pressure.

The gap Labs are built to close

These aren't figures we invented for a pitch — they're why "remember who owns what" was never going to be enough on its own.

4.34 hrs/week

Average time spent dealing with workplace conflict — more than double the 2.1 hours measured in 2008.

The Myers-Briggs Company, Conflict at Work (2022)
Only 46%

of employees clearly know what is expected of them at work — down from 56% in 2020.

Gallup, U.S. employee engagement trend (2024)
60% & 96%

higher psychological safety is associated with greater odds of reporting near misses and events.

Joint Commission Journal on Quality & Patient Safety (2021)

What changes?

For the business

Fewer breakdowns, better decisions

  • Reduced friction and rework — clearer expectations and handoffs, fewer "I thought you meant…" failures, faster recovery from issues.
  • Better decisions under pressure — explicit attention to value conflicts, clearer decision ownership, and more honest input from the people closest to the work.
  • Stronger operational safety — HOP principles are actually lived in conversations and decisions, not just posted on a wall.
  • A more mature accountability culture — experienced as clarity and shared ownership, not blame or command-and-control.
For participants

Leaders, managers & teams

  • A more nuanced accountability practice — clear expectations and decisions, awareness of how power and expertise shape the room, and relationship-first behaviors that unlock better information.
  • Greater confidence handling performance, safety, and cross-functional issues without drama.
  • A clearer experience for workers that they're part of the solution — their insight expected and valued as a critical input to safety and performance.

Who are the Labs built for?

Organizations with 150 to 100,000 employees, enough scale to invest meaningfully in leadership and organizational capability — especially operations-heavy sites where silos, artificial harmony, and "meetings before the meeting" are already costing you.

Site & plant leaders

Site directors & ops leadership

You want a shared accountability language across every leadership tier at your site — not another one-off training that fades in a month.

HR & L&D

CHROs, HR & L&D leaders

You're looking for an applied learning series that reaches leaders, managers, and individual contributors — with practice built into real work, not a classroom event.

High-consequence ops

Regulated & high-stakes environments

Your industry doesn't tolerate silence when something's wrong. Labs build the relationship-first habits that get issues raised earlier — without diluting your safety standards.
